AIDS prevention

How can we prevent transmission of HIV?
Abstinence (not having sex) is the only 100% sure way of preventing the sexual transmission of HIV.
For those people who choose to engage in sexual activities, the following are options to reduce the risk:

  • Practice Safer Sex.
  • Have sex with one monogamous partner.
  • Consistently and correctly use a latex or polyurethane male or female condom along with appropriate lubricants. Only water-based lubricants should be used with latex condoms. Any type of lubricant (oil or water-based) can be used for polyurethane condoms. Pay careful attention to the appropriate procedures to ensure proper use of condoms.

Clean Needles
Always use a new, clean needle. Free needles are available and can prevent the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C. Free and confidential needle exchange programs are easily accessible.
